AHEAD is pleased to offer a package of three webinars to support disability services’ providers who are accommodating students in online courses and advocating for the use of accessible information and communication technology across campus.

The World Within Reach: The World Web of Accessibility is a package of three webinars offered every other week on Wednesday afternoons from 3:00 – 4:00 pm Eastern Time. This compact schedule will allow for processing time while maintaining engagement with the topic. As with all AHEAD webinars, these presentations will be recorded and available to watch at your convenience if the times don’t fit your schedule.

  • February 7, 2018: "Creating a Culture of Accessibility on your Campus" presented by Lori Kressin, University of Virginia and Kelly Hermann, University of Phoenix
  • February 21, 2018: "Approaches to Policy and Procedures to Support Accessible Information and Communication Technology" presented by Linda Sullivan, Harvard University and Kelly Hermann, University of Phoenix
  • March 7, 2018: "Tech Talk for the Non-Tech DS Professional" presented by Brad Held, University of Central Florida and Kelly Hermann, University of Phoenix
Online learning has been growing by leaps and bounds across higher education over the past two decades. In the 2015 Survey of Online Learning conducted by the Babson Survey Research Group, the number of students engaging in online courses increased by 3.9%, which was up from 3.7% the previous year. In total, more than one in four students now takes at least one courses at a distance. A total of 5.8 million students took courses at a distance during the fall 2014 semesters.

At the same time, the federal government has been involved in several complaints and legal cases regarding the accessibility of online courses and educational technology used at specific campuses. These cases have solidified the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines as the benchmark standard to follow, but what do those standards really mean? How does the average disability service provider with limited expertise in technical accessibility get started? And what do we do to institutionalize a campus commitment to accessibility and to ensure that it also applies to the technology we use?

This package of webinars is facilitated by Kelly Hermann, Vice President of Accessibility and Disability Strategy at the University of Phoenix, and an expert in accessibility in distance education. Kelly is a long-term member of AHEAD and regular, well-respected presenter. She has been the Chair of AHEAD’s Standing Committee on Policy and is currently the Chair of the Online and Distance Learning Special Interest Group. The presenters are AHEAD members who work with a significant number of online courses and students studying at a distance. They will identify the issues prevalent in this work and provide practical strategies and ideas for addressing the needs. Each webinar will include 45 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes for questions.
