AHEAD invites you to submit nominations for the 2026 AHEAD Awards! Please take the time to recognize colleagues and students for their exceptional work and leadership in disability resources and their contributions to increasing access and inclusion in higher education. AHEAD member, partner, or student award recipients will be recognized at the 2026 AHEAD Annual Conference, but nominees do not have to attend the Conference to be nominated and considered. As the CEO and Board of Directors for the Association on Higher Education And Disability (AHEAD), we are writing in response to Rose Horowitch’s December 2 “Accommodation Nation” article in The Atlantic. For nearly 50 years, AHEAD has represented disability resource professionals and researchers in higher education. We welcome discussions on disability in higher education but want to address the article’s claims about the supposed overabundance of test accommodations and its links to income inequality. We are excited to announce that Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) has introduced legislation to help college students with disabilities succeed. As voiced by AHEAD members, one of AHEAD’s top policy priorities is to provide flexibility for college students to take recommended course load levels without risking federal financial assistance. As you might recall, Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY) introduced the Pell Grant Flexibility Act ( HR 4931 ) last Congress, and again in this Congress, to provide that flexibility for college students with disabilities as it relates to Pell Grants. The Association on Higher Education and Disability’s Research K&P Community Dissertation Award recognizes exemplary doctoral research connected to disability in higher education. Your help is needed to advance important legislation through the provision of data and examples demonstrating its need/potential benefit. As reported in the September HUB , Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) have reintroduced the AHEAD-inspired Pell Grant Flexibility Act ( HR 4931 ). If this bill should become law, students with disabilities whose institution of higher education recommends a reduced course load, at least 5 credits, will not have their Pell Grant award reduced should they take that suggested course load. Additionally, their Pell Grant semester limit would only be reduced by a fraction, thus providing Pell Grant funding ...
